This Nakashima inspired refectory style dining table is made from sycamore and fumed oak. The central beam connects the trestle legs by means of a hidden wedge system which ensures the table remains extremely steady in use whilst being simple to disassemble if required. A traditional concept with a contemporary twist.
Scottish oak console table. The tight double curve of its sinuous design demanded some serious R&D to steam bend a relatively large piece of oak. Due to previous experience in steam bending Alasdair was commissioned by Bodan Design & Manufacture to build the piece for one of their clients.
Scottish sycamore dining table in a contemporary Scandi style for a steading conversion in the Highlands of Scotland. Made from a tree felled in the client’s garden, the wood was air dried for more than a year, then kiln dried prior to commencing the project. The turned cylindrical legs contrast the more angular frame and sharper top. Traditional mortice and tenon joints are pegged with walnut dowels adding a further contrast in the light and dark woods. The piece reflects both the modern and traditional within the client’s home.
American cherry low-slung storage cabinet. A previous client approached Alasdair to design and make a flexible storage system to complement their existing suite of furniture, which included a previously designed and made CD cabinet. The cabinet is a modular system designed in three sections, with finger-jointed legs and frame & panel doors of solid cherry.
Pair of tripod stools in maple and walnut. This sculptural tripod design can be flat packed and requires no tools to construct. Collaborating with Bodan Design & Manufacture, Alasdair detailed this design into an elegant, workable solution from an initial concept sketch by a local architect. After refining the concept and design, Alasdair produced both stools.
Walnut kitchen island and wall cabinets. An Edinburgh client commissioned Alasdair Campbell Furniture to add some natural touches to their high end kitchen. Alasdair met with the clients and worked up a proposal to use walnut to add a stark and beautiful contrast to their contemporary light kitchen.
This oak library was commissioned by a literature loving client for their impressive Victorian dwelling in Angus. They were looking for a library blending a range of traditional styles and requested the inclusion of a series of antique panels into the design. The library consists of a mixture of open adjustable shelves, frame & panel-doored storage and display cabinets for their collection of curios - incorporating adjustable shelves with integrated LED strips.
American black walnut bar cabinet. The brief from the client, a lover of Belgian beer, was for a more traditional-looking cabinet to store and serve his favourite tipple. Working up a more traditional design, Alasdair used solid walnut with tongue and groove panels and turned handles.
Steam bent oak hall bench – a double award-winning collaboration. Alasdair was tasked by furniture designer Namon Gaston to make this bench for one of his clients. Steam bent cylindrical arms and an oak frame support a leather seat made by SodaKitsch. The Wu Bench won the Production Made Furniture Award at the 2012 Wood Awards and received the 2012 Visual Arts Scotland award for Applied Arts.
Steam bent oak chairs and circular oak dining table. Pre-cursor to the award-winning Wu Bench, designed by Namon Gaston, Alasdair was also commissioned to make this dining set of six chairs and a table. Chairs - steam bent, cylindrical arms and tripod frame oak base with leather seats. Table - circular oak top on a sturdy tripod frame.
